Nelson Mandela Dies Aged 95
South Africa’s first ever black president and anti-apartheid icon, Nelson Mandela, has died.
Nelson Mandela took his final breath during the evening hours on the 5th of December 2013 at around 8:50pm South Africa time. His death was announced by President Jacob Zuma.
Mr Mandela, who led South Africa’s transition from white-minority rule in the 90s, after 27 years in prison on Robben Island, died aged 95.
He was believed to be at home when he died, where he had been suffering from a severe lung infection.
On national TV, Mr Zuma said that Mr Mandela had departed and was now at peace.

1918 Nelson Mandela was born.
1943 Nelson Mandela joined the African National Congress.
1956 Nelson Mandela was charged with treason, but all charges were dropped.
1962 Arrested, convicted and sentenced to 5 years imprisonment.
1964 Nelson Mandela was charged with sabotage and sentenced to life.
1990 The year he was freed from prison.
1993 Nelson Mandela wins the Nobel Peace Prize.
1994 The year he was elected the first black president.
1999 Steps down as South Africa’s leader.
2001 Gets prostate cancer.
2004 Retires from public life.
2013 Dies.
Before MR Zuma had finished his speech, he said “Mr Mandela has brought us together, and together we will bid him farewell.”
